PANJIM: Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) has directed Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) to initiate necessary proceedings as per law against the person dumping waste in Merces-Vaddy fields. The order was issued by GCZMA OSD – STE Sanjeev Joglekar to inspect and submit a compliance report.
The minutes of the GCZMA meeting state, “This office is in receipt of a complaint from Merces Manch Welfare Association dated 11/07/2018 regarding dumping of garbage in the paddy field bearing survey No 6/2 of Merces village of Tiswadi, against Augusto D’Souza. “
Further, it says, “Augusto D’Souza has cut mangroves and has started dumping debris and other hazardous waste which is low-lying area and causing damage to agriculture and rivulet connecting Mandovi river.”
GCZMA said that GSPCB has already inspected the site and carried out pollution and chemical test on the soil and the waste flowing in the rivulet and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the tenant.
“Inspite of that the tenant is again doing illegal dumping of waste in low-lying areas. The authority noted that inspite of imposing fine by GSPCB the tenant is again doing illegal dumping of waste in low lying areas,” it says.
Therefore, the order says, “The authority resolved to forward the complaint to GSPCB to initiate necessary proceedings as per law against the alleged violator.”
