MARGAO: The executive members of Goencho Ekvott (GE) on Sunday submitted a memorandum to South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha highlighting the Sagarmala Project, the Major Port Authorities Bill and the three linear projects passing through Mollem protected forests which are linked to the coal transportation through Goa to make it a coal hub.
Goencho Ekvott member Olencio Simoes apprised the MP about the details of the Sagarmala project and the work undertaken.
He explained the ill effects of Goa been declared as Coastal Economic Zone and informed the MP on the CRZ amendment to favour the MPT expansion plan.
He reiterated that as the width of the Goan Rivers is less, once dredging commences, it would lead to the collapse of riverbanks and mangroves.
Goencho Avaaz convenor Capt Viriato Fernandes explained in detail the clauses of the Major Port Authorities Bill which was passed in the recent Lok Sabha session.
He called upon Sardinha to push for the removal of MPT from the ambit of this bill, as Goa being a small State such a large infrastructure development would do severe damage to its ecology. If MPT is not omitted then it will be a State within a State. Also, alternative plans for the transportation of coal from the neighbouring States were suggested. The dispute regarding the survey number for the reclaimed land at Mormugao was also discussed and how the MPT is flexing its muscle by disrespecting the elected representatives of Goa.
The MP assured the delegation that he would study the project and take up the matter with the authorities. He extended his unconditional support to prevent damage to the environment. He requested the team to submit him with a copy of all the plans, the study conducted, and documents available with the organisation.
