PANJIM: The last rites of former Chief of Army Staff General Sunith F Rodrigues (retd) were peformed with full military honours at the St Inez crematorium, Panjim on Monday evening.
The mortal remains were brought from his Defence Colony residence, Porvorim to the St Inez crematorium in a vehicle decked with flowers.
Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat and other dignitaries paid their tribute to the departed soul.
The General was given gun-salute in line with the protocol. A large number of defence personnel took part in the cremation ceremony.
General Rodrigues died on Friday after a prolonged illness. A native of Curtorim, Rodrigues was born in Mumbai and was commissioned in the Indian Army in 1952. He was Chief of the Army Staff from 1990 to 1993. He also served as Governor of Punjab from 2004 to 2010.
