AGASSAIM: Goods worth Rs 80 lakh were gutted after fire broke out at a general store, in market area, here, on Friday night.
Fire broke out around 11.30 pm after the proprietor of ‘Shop and Save Stores’ had pulled down the shutters and returned home. Alerted by the sound of blasts, people residing in the vicinity rushed to the site to put out the flames. The fire personnel were also informed, but they reached after an hour with three fire tenders – one each from Old Goa, Panjim and Verna. And after struggling for almost two hours, the fire was brought under control at 3.30 am.
Sources suspect a short circuit could have triggered the fire. Most of the destroyed goods were grocery items.
A family residing on the second floor of the same building was unharmed.
