MAPUSA: A general store owned by Seema Tilve was gutted while a jewelry shop of Shripad Haldankar was partially damaged after the Aldona market building caught fire on Monday night.
According to Mapusa Fire Station, soon after Police Control Room (PCR) received a call at 11.30 pm, a team of fire personnel rushed to the spot. It took more than an hour for the team to douse the fire completely.
The team led by Anand Naik comprised firefighters Jayesh Kandolkar, Richard Trindade, Hitesh Parab, and Pravin Pissurlekar.
The owners claimed a loss of around Rs 50,000 while the fire team managed to save property worth Rs 2 lakh. The cause of the fire is suspected to be a short circuit.
The shop owners operating in the market however have suspected foul play. They said that someone must have set the fire.
“Last month, one person had set fire after which a police complaint was filed,” said a shop owner.
