GFP files complaint with Lokayukta over ‘Labour Gate’

Charges that an amount of over Rs 13 crore has been disbursed to 15,490 ‘so called’ construction workers and labourers during the pandemic

PANJIM: The Goa Forward Party (GFP) on Friday filed a complaint before Goa Lokayukta Justice (retired) PK Misra alleging multi-crore “Labour Gate Scam” by the State government, wherein crores of rupees have been disbursed amongst the BJP workers from the financial support earmarked for building and other construction workers to tied over the loss of wages caused due to COVID pandemic. 

GFP Vice President Durgadas Kamat in a complaint has charged that an amount of over Rs 13 crore has been disbursed to 15,490 ‘so called’ construction workers and labourers during the pandemic.

“We have filed complaint with Lokayukta and have demanded that the responsibility be fixed against the politicians and officials involved in the scam,” Kamat told media persons. 

He said that an urgent hearing in the complaint has been sought before Lokayukta. 

Earlier in the week, Kamat, had produced documents before media listing out the names of the beneficiaries. Around 2070 beneficiaries are from Bardez Taluka, while another 1890 from Pernem, Bicholim 1522, Sattari, 1330, Tiswadi 700, Dharbandora 620, Salcete 370, Canacona 360 and Mormugao 40. There are 3,440 beneficiaries outside Goa.

He had further pointed out that nearly 940 people have received an amount of Rs 6,000 each, while another 1,500 received Rs 10,000, while Rs 20,000 each benefit was given to 600 people.

Also, there are 300 people who received Rs 30,000 another 306 with benefit of Rs 40,000 and five people got over Rs nine lakh each.

The government had announced to provide financial support of Rs 6,000 each to around 15,000 construction workers and another Rs 4,000 each to other 4,000 labourers.
