MARGAO: The group Goyche Fuldke Pilge Khatir (GFPK) has criticised the government after finding documents of the Central government that shows three rivers in Goa being marked for cargo/passenger movement and have opposed the industrialisation of jetties and rivers of Goa.

In this case, GFPK referred to the detailed project report shared by the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, which identified three rivers in Goa, namely Cumbarjua, Zuari and Mandovi River as being viable for cargo/passenger movement. Jetties like Cortalim have also been mentioned in this list that also has other details of the rivers’ routes.

“Industrialisation of Mandovi,   Zuari, Cumbharjua and Chapora river is totally uncalled for and we strongly oppose this decision,” said Jack Mascarenhas, GFPK President.

“None of the rivers in Goa were declared as National Waterways under National Waterways Act 2016 with the consultation of the people of Goa.

The same is true with regard to changing MPT to Mormugao Ports Authority (MPA) under the Major Ports Act 2021. Both these Indian Laws are hostile to the interests of Goa, especially its fishing communities and rivers,” he added.
