PANJIM, MARCH 3
Goa Headmasters Association (GHA) today stood by its vice president Abdul Aziz Mulla, who was suspended by the management allegedly for giving corporal punishment to a pupil.
Mulla, the headmaster of Anjuman Nurul Islam High School, Panjim, was placed under suspension for assaulting 14-year-old student studying in the eighth standard.
GHA’s executive committee, which met today under the presidentship of Jose Mario Quadros, resolved that “Mulla should be allowed to join duties as the suspension order has lapsed.”
The meeting resolved that Mulla was suspended by his school management on the charge of corporal punishment, without going into the merits of the case.
“The director of education has to confirm the suspension order within a period of 15 days as more than 20 days have passed since the order was issued and the same was not confirmed,” the resolution reads.
The Headmasters felt that Mulla should be allowed to join his duties and the inquiry should continue and he should be punished if found guilty.
The GHA also expressed its displeasure over uncertainty in implementing the Right to Education (RTE) by the state Education Department.
Quadros said that the RTE 2009 was passed by Parliament and sent to all the states including Goa and three years’ time was given to implement the same. “A copy of the act was sent to all the schools by the Directorate of Education asking for comments, “he recalled. He said that the comments were sent and nothing more was heard.
“Inquiries with the Directorate of Education, the secretary of education and the minister of education have all drawn a blank leaving us all in doubt as to when it will be implemented although it has got some very good proposals like mass promotion full day school et al,” the GHA has added in its resolution.
