PANJIM: Seeking proper duty hours for over-stressed cops who at times have to be on duty round-the-clock, the intervention of Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) has been sought.
A formal complaint has been filed by advocate and social activist Aires Rodrigues with GHRC to seek “workable” shift hours for the police force.
The situation has worsened and fatigued and stressed out cops usually get a break only after several days of work and this has taken a toll on their lives with a spate of incidents that has exposed stress-related fragility affecting the police force. It has also been taking a toll on their mental and physical health.
It has been pleaded in the complaint that alike all other government employees, the police should also be allotted an eight-hour shift which will increase their efficiency.
Adv Rodrigues brought to the notice of the commission that on account of the long hours of work related stress, a lot of the policemen are grappling with serious health problems like hypertension, diabetes and depression and that the working and living conditions at some of the police stations and barracks was not very conducive.
Seeking that the genuine grievances and pathetic working conditions confronting the police force be looked into by the Government in right earnest, the petition has also request the commission to seek explanation from Chief Secretary and Director General of Police for violating human rights of the Police officers.
