The Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) comprising of Retired District
Judge A.D.Salkar and Mr.J.A Keny today issued notices to the Chief Secretary
and Director General of Police directing them to appear on 18th October in
connection with the complaint filed by Adv. Aires Rodrigues that police
personnel deployed at the BRICS summit in South Goa were being made to work
very long hours amidst pathetic and very appalling working conditions.
The GHRC has also sought an urgent detailed report from the Chief Secretary
and the Director General of Police over the very inhumane treatment being meted
out to those police personnel’
The GHRC has also directed the Secretary of the Commission
Siddhivinayak Naik along with Deputy Superintendent of Police Kiran Poduval
attached to the Commission to visit the sites today and submit a detailed
report about the working conditions of the police personnel posted on duty for
the BRICS summit.
Adv. Aires Rodrigues in his complaint today stated that the police
personnel are being made to work very long hours which needless to say was
taking a toll on their personal lives with a 25 year old police constable
Jeevan Gaonkar suffering a heart attack yesterday.
Adv. Rodrigues has also stated that despite the GHRC having more than
once reminded the Government that police personnel are Human beings and should
so be treated, the authorities had failed to make all proper arrangements
including food, water and toilet facilities for the police personnel.
Adv. Rodrigues has in his complaint further stated that while the
Government has gone overboard in making all arrangements for the visiting
dignitaries, it had conveniently neglected to cater to the basic fundamental
and human rights of its own police personnel.
Pointing out that the authorities have lost sight that a policeman too
has a personal life, Adv. Rodrigues has stated that the Government cannot be
allowed to be a cause for ruining the health and lives of the police personnel.
Adv. Rodrigues in his complaint has sought that the Chief Secretary and
Director General of Police be directed to explain as to how they have been mere
spectators to this grave and gross Human Rights violations of the Police
personnel in the State.
