Team Herald

PANJIM: The Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) on Monday directed a team of GHRC headed by Secretary Vikas Gaunekar to inspect the site of the proposed Zuarinagar Police Station that currently functions as Sancoale police outpost.

The team is also directed to submit a report immediately with further hearing on the matter adjourned to February 23. The GHRC is hearing a complaint filed by Adv Aires Rodrigues alleging that an ill-equipped Sancoale police outpost is sought to be hurriedly converted into a full-fledged Zuarinagar Police Station.

During the hearing on Monday, the petitioner submitted to the GHRC that the government was unlawfully acting in breach of law pointed out that the setting up of a new police station needs to be first notified in the Official Gazette and that the jurisdiction of the new police station has to be also specified in terms of Section 2 (S) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

He further drew the attention of the GHRC that the shoddy premises does not have separate toilets and barracks for lady staff while the power supply to the current police outpost is being illegally drawn from a neighbouring petrol pump and the water supply was courtesy of Zuari Agro Chemicals.

Adv Rodrigues stated that present situation at the structure will be ‘ruining the health of the police staff’.

Meanwhile, the State government on February 24 will inaugurate the Zuarinagar Police Station.
