PANJIM: Goa Handicraft and Rural Small Scale Industries Development Corporation (GHRSSIDC) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Coal India Limited to purchase coal from South Eastern Coalfield Limited.
“Goa will lift 35,000 tonnes of coal annually as a part of MoU which would be supplied to seven to eight units which are dependent on it as a raw material,” Goa Handicraft and Rural Small Scale Industries Development Corporation deputy manager S N Parsekar told reporters Monday.
The State government will assist the small scale industries to import coal from Chhattisgarh, as primary fuel for the Ferro alloy and sponge iron industries here, he said.
The state has an allocation of one lakh tones per annum but since there is less response from buyers, the State has decided to limit the purchases to 35,000 tonnes. The transportation of coal to Goa will be done by road.
“The corporation will earn five per cent commission from the total value of the raw material purchased. The corporation purchased coal and supplied it to several industries since 2009 until in 2011 when the MoU was discontinued due to lack of response from the companies,” he said.
