GHRSSIDC to set up crafts village

PANJIM, DEC 26 The Goa Handicrafts Rural and Small Scale Industries Development Corporation (GHRSSIDC), which has been vigorously promoting local handicrafts during last five years will now encourage artisans by setting up crafts village.

The Goa Handicrafts Rural and Small Scale Industries Development Corporation (GHRSSIDC), which has been vigorously promoting local handicrafts during last five years will now encourage artisans by setting up crafts village.
About 200-250 artisans in Goa would be provided with residence cum work sheds, and also space for displaying their crafts under the same roof.
Briefing about this project Samir Salgaonkar, Chairman of GHRSSIDC told a press conference on Friday here that, the project will focus on various crafts of Goa. The project would also explore the possibilities of preparing a road map for design development, marketing tie-up, promoting Self artisans will be encouraged to form self-help groups so that they can strengthen and sustain their activities through larger community participation.
Enhancing the skills of craftsmen, he said, is the prime objective of the project besides creating job opportunities.
The South Asia Foundation (SAF) works for upliftment of rural artisans and promotion of arts and crafts across border, is currently working on the project.
A diagnostic survey of the area to find desirability of the people interested in being trained in various crafts, will be conducted. Also, a raining cum Production Centre will be set up and every effort will be made to make the crafts village a centre of excellence in promoting and preserving arts and crafts of Goa, he added.
