PANJIM: Referring to the report ‘Another girder develops crack on Talpona-Galgibag bridge’, PWD said that the prestressed concrete I-beam girders are being executed for the Galgibaga bridge on the Canacona bypass. The length of the girders is 30 metres and depth is 1.95 metres, while grade of concrete is M40.
The department further said that the girders are cast and stressed on the ground, and they are stressed for a load of 420 tonnes with jacks to ensure pressure and elongation to within permissible limit of 15 percent.
“All the stressing is done in the presence of Authority engineer’s and contractor’s bridge engineer with the expert staff from the manufacturer’s of the specialized equipment. Only after satisfying all the parameters and the codal provisions, the girders are permitted for launching on the piers. If any excessive cracking or failure is noticed, the girder stands rejected and not used,” a statement from PWD said.
