PANJIM: Girish Chodankar quit as Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president a few hours after AICC interim president Sonia Gandhi asked party presidents of five States to put in their papers following the drubbing the Congress received in the just-concluded Assembly polls.
On March 10, Chodankar had announced that he would resign as GPCC president owing moral responsibility for the party’s defeat.

Though Chodankar was not available for his reaction, sources close to him said he had tendered his resignation to the AICC Goa in-charge Dinesh Gundu Rao.
Earlier, on two occasions Chodankar had resigned as president, the last being when the party suffered a defeat in the Zilla Panchayat (ZP) elections in December 2020.
There are reports that the names of party MLAs Aleixo Sequeira and Sankalp Amonkar and former bureaucrat Elvis Gomes are being considered for the GPCC president’s post. Sequeira and Amonkar are former Youth Congress presidents known for their organisational capabilities.
When contacted, Sequeira declined to comment while Gomes said, “I have come to know that my name has been recommended for the GPCC president’s post. I have not said anything.”
Though a new president will be appointed within the next two to three days, party sources said the process for the organisational polls has also started and that the new State unit president will be duly elected by September this year.
