A disappointing performance in the ongoing Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) exams led a student to end her life at her residence in Durgabhat, Ponda on Tuesday morning.
According to reports, Sayani Pandit took the drastic step after she was upset with her chemistry exams on Monday.
The incident came to light when Sayani’s father, Shyam returned home at around 11.50 am. He was horrified to see the body of his daughter hanging from a ceiling fan in the house.
Ponda police say Shyam grew suspicious about Sayani’s behaviour and decided to return home early.
Shyam, a contractor, had left for work in the morning, while Shyam’s wife, a teacher, was also out along with their son.
Sayani, a student at a higher secondary school in Kavlem-Ponda, was alone at home at the time of the incident. Ponda police said the parents were aware that Sayani was unhappy with her performance, but had not expected her to take such a drastic step.
“The parents informed us that Sayani was upset when she returned home after answering her chemistry paper on Monday. She even told her parents about the paper. Later in the evening, she visited a few friends and seemed relaxed,” a police officer told Herald.
“Sayani’s father, however, was a little suspicious and decided to return home early on Tuesday. When he reached the house, he saw his daughter’s lifeless body hanging from a ceiling fan,” the police officer added. Sayani was rushed to the ID Hospital at Ponda, where doctors declared her dead. Police Sub Inspector Deepak Pednekar is investigating.
