PORVORIM: An alert 14-year-old schoolgirl foiled attempts by two youth to sexually assault her at Tivim on Friday evening.
According to Mapusa Police, the incident took place as the girl, who is an SSC student at a school in Tivim, was proceeding towards the bus stop to return home after attending classes at about 4.30 pm.
Police said two youth, who were hiding behind a stationary rickshaw by the roadside, suddenly grabbed her and tried to forcibly put some drink in her mouth.
The girl acted swiftly and escaped from their clutches with the help of her umbrella. She then fled from the site and rushed to the nearest bus stop, where she managed to catch a bus proceeding to Sirsaim. On returning home, the girl narrated the incident to her mother.
The mother noticed a wound on her daughter’s leg and took her to the District Hospital at Mapusa for a checkup, besides reporting the matter to Tivim MLA Kiran Kandolkar.
The MLA then notified Mapusa police and a police team conducted an inquiry in the area. One of the victim’s classmates told police that she had seen the two boys alongside the rickshaw (GA-03-1583).
Mapusa Police has registered a case of molestation against the unknown accused and Police Sub Inspector Ratnaker Calangutker is investigating the case.
Condemning the incident, Kandolkar said: “The police should book the accused as early as possible, failing which such cases will increase. It will be difficult not only for girls, but also for women to walk along the road even during the day.”
