MAPUSA: The account holders/depositors of various branches of Mapusa Urban Co-operative Bank (MUCB) spread across Goa held a peaceful protest to express the unwarranted grief and misery imposed on them due to the scam, frauds and mismanagement of board of directors in disbursement of so called “Bad Loans” in front of the bank headquarters, at Nandadeep Building, here, on Monday.
The depositors stated that embargo imposed by RBI on the functioning and collapse of Mapusa Urban Co-operative Bank since July 2015 will expire on February 18, and once it is expired, the funds of over three-lakh depositors will stand unknown. These depositors are mainly senior citizens, small time traders, entrepreneurs, teachers, professionals and are from various walks of life, who urgently need their hard earned money for their basic livelihood and denial of this would constitute a serious violation under the Human Rights Violation Act.
The depositors further said that they are deprived to have their own hard earned money due to the alleged planned malicious calculated mismanagement by the 12 Board of Directors of MUCB.
They further alleged that even after giving a written petition addressed to Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, the State government has remained mute spectator of the sordid affairs of the MUCB.
“Under Section 36AA of the Banking Regulation ACT 1949, RBI is empowered to remove the chairman, director, general manager and CEO and can appoint suitable person in place of chairman in the public interest,” the depositors said.
“This bank is cheating the depositors for the last four years. It’s the hard earned money of the depositors that they are asking for however even after having money, they are deprived of using it. We even filed First Information Report (FIR) but due to political pressure, the FIR is not registered. We request the concerned authorities to take necessary action”, a depositor said.
“Since money cannot be kept in the house, we kept in the bank but bank itself made fraud. We are not asking for any charity we are only asking for our hard earned money. Bank is saying that money is given as bad loans. Who are these defaulters? The bank should declare the names of the defaulters”, another account holder said.
The depositors further informed that they will make all efforts to extend their agitation by conducting similar protests at all the branches of MUCB across Goa.
