Glimmer of hope for withering police quarters

Govt to conduct NDT on the quarters at Chicalim to decide whether demolish them and build new ones or carry out repairs

VASCO: Finally, after turning a blind eye towards the dilapidated condition of police quarters at Chicalim for past several years, the State administration has now decided to conduct non-destructive testing (NDT) to evaluate the structural stability of the three-decade-old police quarters and to ascertain whether the building housing policemen and their families needs to be demolished to make way for a new building or can be repaired under the present condition.
The decision was taken after a joint site inspection held on Friday by Panchayat Minister and Dabolim MLA Mauvin Godinho, Chicalim Sarpanch Sebastiao Pereira, Assistant Engineer (PWD) A D Nagarjee and others.
“During the inspection we found that the building was in a bad shape and unfit for human habitation. These policemen are working day and night to maintain law and order and their own family members are living in such building which is unsafe. Nevertheless, it has now been decided to conduct a NDT on these quarters and will decide whether to demolish these buildings and build new ones or the same building can be taken up for repairs,” Godinho said, adding that he had asked the PWD officials to ensure that the test report comes as early as possible.
Once the report is received, the PWD will prepare an estimate so that some concrete solution can be taken on priority, he said.
