PANJIM: Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) could soon be recognised as a Superspeciality Teaching institute as the government begins the process for seeking permissions.
Government has fast tracked the process of seeking permission from the Medical Council of India (MCI) to grant various of GMC’s superspeciality departments the status of teaching departments.
Speaking to Herald, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said, “By next year we will get the seats. I have formed a committee under Joint Secretary, Health to monitor the correspondence with the MCI. For the last five years the files regarding making the departments teaching department, have been rotting.”
Stating that the efforts are towards making GMC an efficient institute, he said “In the next two and half years we will have 21 superspeciality doctors available in different departments.”
The proposal includes 2 MCh seats in Urology, 2 DM seats in Cardiology, 1 MCh seat in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, 1 PDCC in Cardiac Anesthesia and 1 DM in the department of Endocrinology. Rane said, “By starting superspeciality courses in these departments it will provide stability to these departments in terms of personnel. Goan students who pass MD or MS will get an opportunity to pursue further studies in the superspeciality of their choice in the state itself.”
For the purpose being granted the permissions, the Health Department has redesignated the consultants in the super-specialty departments of the GMC. Rane said “Redesignation of consultants will be one of the important and first steps to start super-specialty courses in GMC.” He said that currently only Neurosurgery department has MCh program.
