GMC docs to be sent abroad for stroke management training

Health Dept considering setting up full-fledged one-stop child care hospital on PPP basis

PANJIM: The State Health Department has decided to collaborate with the University of Southern California and University of Miami to train doctors of Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) in stroke management. From the coming financial year, Health Department will earmark around Rs two-three crore for exchange programmes.
Addressing media persons on Tuesday, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said the government is working on a proposal to tie up with the two universities. “We want to motivate and get our doctors updated to the latest techniques in the field of stroke management. Every year, we would like to send five-six doctors from various fields to foreign countries for training purposes,” he said.
Rane said young doctors working in the public health sector should be given exposure to advances in their field. “They should be given a chance to enrich their experience and opportunities to upgrade their skills which will in turn help the people of Goa,” he said.
Rane said a doctor from the Urology Department has been selected to be part of the training at the University of Miami. “To provide the best medical treatment to the people of Goa, government won’t mind spending Rs 2 to Rs 3 crore on training doctors in foreign countries. We need to give more exposure to the doctors,” he said.
“We earmark Rs five crore for small hot mixing of roads in panchayat areas. Why can’t we spend Rs two crore on doctors who will return it by providing service to the people?” he stated.
