GMC felicitates parents for organ donation that saved 5 patients’ lives

Panjim: A day after they decided to donate the organs of their 21-year old son, the Goa Medical College (GMC) decided to felicitate the parents of Pradhyuman Soni, for their decision to give a new lease of life to five other patients. 

  The felicitation was done at the hands of Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, who thanked the parents for a great decision they made of saving the lives of 5 people.  

GMC Dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar said all recipients of the organs are doing well now. The organs were sent to donors’ out of Goa for the recipients as per NOTTO list.

“The brain death certification of Pradhyuman, who met with an accident on Thursday, was done by Dr Teresa Ferrira after Apnoea tests mandated by Law. As per the waiting list currently, which is only of GMC, the SOTTO team contacted the potential recipient for the workup.  The aim of the programme is to maximize the organ utilisation and minimise the organ wastage. The organ is a national resource the other organs were offered to the region and allocation was done of the liver and heart as per the waiting list,” Dr Bandekar said.

It added that since there was no registered recipient for the lung in the region it was offered to the rest of the country and NOTTO allocated the lung to the State of Telangana.

The heart was transplanted into a 59-year-old recipient from Mumbai suffering from Non Ischeamic dilated cardiomyopathy with EF 10 to 15% 

The lungs were transplanted to a 58-year-old recipient who was on Ecmo and diagnosed with a Post COVID fibrosis.

The liver has been successfully transplanted to 59-year-old male admitted at Nagpur. 

“All the three recipients are doing well. The kidney recipients at GMC are also doing well. This is just the beginning and we have a long road ahead. Goa is now on the organ donation and transplant map of India,” Dr Bandekar added.
