PANJIM: Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) has been selected by the Union Ministry of Health to set up a Regional Cancer Centre.
Speaking to Herald, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said that the proposal had been pending with the government for more than a year.
He said, “Cancer has become a very common disease in Goa and has overtaken cases of cardiology. A proposal has been pending in the Health Department for a very long time and has now been pushed into the final stages of acceptance.”
He said that the MoU between the Centre and the State would be signed with the next 10 days.
He said, “I will go all out to ensure that the Goa Medical College has its own Regional Cancer Center, and will work under the guidance of the Chief Minister to ensure the MoU for it is signed at the earliest.”
The Centre has sanctioned Rs 45 crore for the project.
Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) will be the nodal agency for the implementation of the project.
Rane stated that the project will be the flagship project of the government and therefore will be taken up on a war footing.
