PANJIM: A strike, called by Goa Medical College Group ‘D’ employees on Monday morning, was called off midmorning after the Health Secretary assured to fulfill their demands by August 15, 2016.
Almost 400 Group D employees were on strike till 12 noon paralyzing the hospital’s operations. These included peons, attendants, sweepers and servants demanding fulfillment of their pending demands. However, after meeting with the secretary the union decided to call off the strike.
The union was demanding that group D employees be administered by an officer other than the medical superintendent, as they alleged they were being harassed. The Heath Secretary immediately handed over charge of the workers to the GMC Administration Director Narayan Sawant.
Workers were also demanding that 192 posts of attendants and sweepers which was pending, be filled. The secretary agreed to fill the vacancies by August 15.
The issue of time bound promotions, pending for many years as many workers have over 10 to 15 years of service and have not been promoted, also came up. They were assured that all issues and demands would be fulfilled within an assured timeframe.
Workers union leader Puti Gaonkar said they will wait August 15 and again call for a strike if the demands are not fulfilled as assured.
