The Goa Action Committee (SOGAC) has issued a stern ultimatum to the government, setting a deadline of January next year to kick-start the process of a comprehensive master plan for Old Goa. Should the authorities fail to meet this deadline, SOGAC has warned of launching a statewide agitation on the critical issue.
Speaking at a press conference held at Azad Maidan, Panaji, on Saturday, SOGAC coordinator Peter Viegas emphasized that Old Goa stands as the sole location boasting world heritage sites. However, despite its historical significance, the absence of a master plan for this iconic place is a cause for concern. Viegas also highlighted that the buffer zones of protected and regulated I and II, as outlined in the Regional Plan, have not been demarcated.
“We are demanding that the government prepares the master plan for Old Goa before the exposition of the relics of St Francis Xavier in 2024,” Viegas asserted.
Expressing dismay, he pointed out that various projects, including an eco-tourism resort, helipad, garbage treatment plant, and a heritage interpretation center, are in the pipeline for Old Goa. Such initiatives, according to Viegas, are incompatible with the historical significance of the area.
“Moreover, numerous illegal constructions are cropping up in and around the world heritage sites,” warned Viegas. He stressed that without proper regulation of these activities, Old Goa risks losing its coveted world heritage status.
SOGAC secretary Freddy Dias echoed these concerns, emphasizing the urgent need to demarcate buffer zones to prevent the proliferation of illegal constructions.
The threat of a statewide agitation underscores the frustration and urgency felt by SOGAC in safeguarding the rich cultural and historical legacy of Old Goa. As the January deadline looms, all eyes are on the government’s response and its commitment to preserving the sanctity of this UNESCO-designated world heritage site.
