PANJIM: Reaching out to the people of Uttarakhand, whose homes and lives have been devastated by flash floods, Goa government on Monday announced a sum of Rs five crore for the rehabilitation of the rain-ravaged state, facing its worst natural calamity.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that government would adopt two villages and the amount would be used for the rehabilitation of the villagers.
He said Uttarakhand was faced with a very major task of ensuring effective and immediate rescue, relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction of the ‘devastated’ areas in the coming days.
Chief Minister said government will contribute Rs five crore for the fund while he himself has decided to give his month’s earnings ~ which amounts to Rs 1,29,500, for the fund. “I have appealed to government servants to contribute their one-day salary,” he said.
Parrikar invited people to contribute to the ‘Chief Minister of Goa, Uttarakhand Relief Fund’, for which an account had been opened with the in State Bank of India bearing account number 33077450333.
Bharatiya Janata Party’s legislative wing will also meet Tuesday and will appeal to all the members to donate their one-month’s salary for the fund, Parrikar stated.
“I appeal to the people of Goa to donate humbly to the Uttarakhand Relief Fund,” he said, adding ‘we will aim for a target of Rs 15 crore collection, which would be spent on rehabilitating the two villages, which would be taken up with the help of Uttarakhand administration.
The heavy rainfall and landslides had caused extensive loss of life and property and untold suffering both to the residents of the affected areas and a large number of pilgrims and tourists visiting the holy shrines of Kedarnath and Badrinath, he said.
