PORVORIM: The Eighth session of the Eighth Goa Assembly
Budget Session started off on a stormy note on July 15, 2024. After just 15
minutes of exchanges on various issues, the house was adjourned by the Speaker
Ramesh Tawadkar for 30 minutes.
The session began with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant stating
that martyrs memorial function was commemorated at Cuncolim on July 15. CM
claimed that he had introduced the chapter in school books and taken the
commemoration to the national level. To this Leader of opposition Yuri Alemao strongly
objected and said only CM’s photos were seen everywhere but chieftains who
died, their photos were nowhere visible. He also called for the renovation of
the Martyrs’ Memorial at Cuncolim within one year to which the CM agreed.
Exactly at 11.38am, Vasco MLA Krishna Daji Salkar sought to
table a Breach of Privilege motion against Congress Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa
to which the Opposition leader vociferously objected. Daji alleged that in
tabling a private member’s resolution on reservation for ST and for remarks
against Speaker Tawadkar, a breach of privilege motion should be passed against
Altone. CM joined the heated discussion saying that Altone had insulted the
Speaker and had to apologise to the Speaker. Yuri argued that nothing stops a
private member from moving a resolution on the ST reservation. He and Altone denied
that the latter had spoken against the Speaker.
Following the heated exchanges, Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar
adjourned the House for 30 minutes at around 11.45am
