Goa BJP Chief Tanavade Advocates for Goans Facing Passport Revocation Over Portugal Birth Registration

Rajya Sabha MP and BJP State President for Goa, Shri Sadanand Shet Tanavade, brought a significant issue affecting numerous Goans to the attention of the Minister of External Affairs during the Zero Hours session in the Rajya Sabha. More than 70 individuals in Goa have faced passport revocation by the Regional Passport Office. This action was taken after renewing their Indian passports post registering their births in Portugal, with the authorities considering the birth registration date in Portugal as the effective citizenship acquisition date.

MP Tanavade appealed to the Minister, urging a reconsideration of the decision, asserting that revoking Indian passports solely based on birth registration in Portugal is unjustified. He proposed that the Ministry allow passport renewal for these individuals until they obtain official citizenship documents from the Portuguese government, crucial for facilitating travel during the transition period.

Additionally, Tanavade suggested expediting the process, enabling swift acquisition of OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cards for individuals upon obtaining Portuguese citizenship. This proposed measure aims to ensure the well-being and ease of travel for affected individuals during the interim period until they receive their Portuguese passports.
