BELGAUM: Agitators pelted stones on Goa-bound vehicles carrying cement along the Dharwar-Goa road near Alnavar in Dharwad district on Wednesday night.
According to Alnavar Police, no one was injured in the incident and the matter was not registered with Alnavar Police station.
When contacted, officials of various organizations, while denying any responsibility in the violence, stated that the agitation against the entry tax will be continued until Goa government completely rolls-back the tax.
Meanwhile, a meeting between transporters and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, that was to be held on Wednesday morning, has been postponed to Saturday as the chief minister had to rush to New Delhi early Wednesday morning.
Minister for Higher Education R V Deshpande, who was in Karwar, has assured transporters and people of north Karnataka that he would have a dialogue with Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar in the matter.
Meanwhile, a delegation of the All India Motor Transport Congress led by its president Bal Malkit Singh met BJP national president Rajnath Singh on Wednesday and requested him to advise Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar to roll back the entry fee imposed on outstation vehicles entering Goa.
In a memorandum submitted to Singh, the AIMTC stated that the artificial barriers like entry tax are against the basic tenet of national integration.
The AIMTC has stated that it is not against the revenue generating exercise but not by targeting the road transport sector. “We have been requesting the Goa government to revise its VAT structure lowered earlier”, said Singh in a press note.
