Goa celebrates Maha Shivratri with religious fervour

Goa is celebrating Mahashivratriwith religious fervour today Saturday. Mahashivratri is celebrated annually in honour of the deity Lord Shiva and is one of the most significant festivals in India. Mahashivratri or the ‘great night of Shiva’ is celebrated on the 14th day of Maagha or Phalguna month on the Hindu calendar. 

Devotees wake up early and worship the Shiva Linga by offering cold water, bael leaves and milk. It is believed that worshipping Lord Shiva on Mahashivratri helps one achieve moksha. According to one of the legends, Mahashivratri marks the union of Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati. Tradition suggests that the Lord tied the nuptial knot with his consort on this day.
