PANJIM: Goa is experiencing the biggest explosion of COVID-19 cases. The State, smallest in the country, has crossed the coronavirus tally of China that recorded 90,655 cases as on April 30, 2021. China is where the virus first identified.
On Friday, April 30, 2021 Goa’s total cases reached 91,052 cases while active cases are close to 23,000. The figures clearly indicate that Goa, which is observing a partial lockdown, is one of the worst-affected of Indian States.
In what could further add to Goa’s embarrassment, a report by the Central government mentions that Goa, along with Karnataka, Kerala, Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Odisha, are not only reporting higher peaks but also a high COVID-19 case growth trajectory.
With a spike of 3024 in 24 hours, Goa’s positivity rate stood at 44.75 per cent. The health bulletin of Department of Health Services states that the 3,024 cases are of the 6,757 samples sent for testing. The active cases count of Goa now stands at 22,945.
The recovery rate has further reduced to 73.52 per cent even as a total 63,939 have recovered so far. In the last 24 hours, 955 COVID-19 patients have recovered.
The State also recorded 22 deaths in the last 24 hours of which nine were reported at the South Goa District Hospital, 12 at Goa Medical College and Hospital and 1 was brought dead to PHC Dharbandora. The total death count reached 1168 as on Friday evening.
The health bulletin further states that active cases count of Margao has crossed the 2,000 mark and now stands at 2,133, whereas other health centers reporting high active COVID-19 positive cases are Cuncolim (1,610), Cortalim (1,492), Panjim (1,476), Porvorim (1,431), Ponda (1,325), Mapusa (1,143) and Bicholim (924).
The State, which is still open for tourism (barring the lockdown) and no negative certificate compulsory, has 22 travellers reporting positive for the virus.
The country has been registering over 3 lakh cases of the coronavirus daily and surpassed other virus epicentres that reported highest cases last year.
