Goa Environment Minister Clarifies Sound Regulations for Year-End Festivities

In the midst of the excitement surrounding the upcoming festive season in Goa, the State’s Environment Minister, Aleixo Sequeira, has provided assurance that the Pollution Control Board is committed to enforcing sound regulations responsibly. In a recent statement, he emphasized that the permitted decibel levels will not be exceeded, ensuring a balance between festive fervour and environmental considerations.

Minister Sequeira affirmed, “I can only give you one assurance that, as far as the Pollution Control Board is concerned, we will ensure that the permitted decibels are not exceeded. We will ensure that at 12:00, Sunburn stops.” He however candidly admitted being unaware of the specific details of their permit.

Acknowledging the public’s concerns about the festival potentially exceeding permissible limits, the minister clarified the permissions granted under the Environment Act. He highlighted that the Government of Goa has a provision to relax noise regulations for up to 15 days, extending from 10:00 in the morning until midnight. This temporary relaxation, applicable from December 24th to December 31st, is not a new development but has been in place for several years, he claimed.

“It is not something new. And according to me, whoever is having a function can apply to the government or to the respective agency seeking permission up to twelve midnight,” Sequeira explained. He further emphasized that the rules have been in existence for years, and any event organizer can apply for permission in adherence to the stipulated guidelines.

While the minister disclosed that he is unaware of the specific timing for which Sunburn has applied for permission, he reiterated that the rules allow events to continue until midnight. “I do not know what time Sunburn has applied. But I’m talking of as far as the rules are concerned. It can go right up to 12:00 p.m. I’m telling you openly. The rules are twelve midnight. Okay. And this is not my doing. These rules are there for years.”

As Goa gears up for the festive season, the emphasis on responsible celebration and adherence to sound regulations underscores the commitment of the government to strike a balance between cultural events and environmental concerns. Event organizers, including Sunburn, are encouraged to apply for permissions in line with the established guidelines to ensure a harmonious celebration for all residents and visitors alike.
