Goa Govt Announces Cash Rewards for Medal-Winning Athletes at Berlin World Games

In a move to recognize and appreciate the outstanding achievements of 13 special sports persons from Goa who recently won medals at the prestigious Berlin World Games, the Goa Government has decided to award them with designated cash prizes and rewards. The announcement was made by Goa Sports Minister, Govind Gaude, who stated that the honours will be bestowed upon the athletes during the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.

The decision to reward these exceptional athletes came after the issue was raised in the legislative assembly by the Leader of the Opposition, Yuri Alemao. During the session, Alemao inquired about the government’s plans to acknowledge the remarkable efforts of the 13 athletes who proudly represented India at the Berlin World Games. He also expressed concern about the 19 medal winners of the Special Olympics who had not received any reward money, citing a lack of funds. Additionally, Alemao highlighted the need for improved infrastructure and equipment for special sportspersons in the State, questioning any perceived disparities in treatment.

In response, Sports Minister Govind Gaude asserted that the government has not shown any “step-motherly” treatment towards athletes in Goa. He emphasized the State’s unwavering commitment to promoting sports and providing firm support to all athletes, irrespective of their backgrounds or abilities.
