MARGAO: The State government has announced the formation of a restructured 18-member State Road Safety Council to offer guidance on improving road safety.
The order from Director (Transport) Pravimal Abhishek states, “The council will formulate and recommend road safety programmes for implementation by State Road Safety Organisations and other State agencies involved in road transportation. It will also suggest research and development areas to enhance road safety, including maintaining and analysing road accident statistics.”
According to the notification, the council will provide advice on planning and coordinating policies, practices, and safety standards within the road transport sector.
The council, led by Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho, comprises high-ranking officials from various departments, including Police, Transport, PWD, Education, Health, Tourism, Pollution Control Board, Environment, and Directorate of Panchayat, and Municipal Administration, as well as road GOACAN coordinator Roland Martins, whose organisation has conducted numerous road safety awareness programmes.
This comes in response to rising accident rates across the State in recent weeks.
