PANJIM: The Congress on Monday alleged that under the BJP, Goa has become a sin city of India with tourists arriving here for casinos, drugs and prostitution.
Addressing party workers, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Luizinho Faleiro said the government has granted extension to offshore casino vessels in River Mandovi, for promotion of tourists. “The BJP-led coalition government had betrayed the people of the State by going back on its promise to do away with casinos,” he said.
“Tourists visit Goa for casinos, drugs and prostitution. Government has promoted Goa as sin city of India,” Faleiro said.
The former Chief Minister said that the government has failed to crack down on prostitution which, he claimed, was rampant in the State.
He admitted that the erstwhile Congress-led coalition government (from 2007-2012) had erred in granting licences to casino operations in Goa, however, people expected the BJP government to get rid of the casino culture.
Faleiro was speaking at the inauguration of Global Goan Chamber of Commerce (GGCC), launched by Congress’s NRI Global Goan Cell President Simon D’Silva. The GGCC is set up by the Goan Diaspora residing in various countries, wanting to be part of the State economy. The Congress’ NRI Global Goan cell has around 2000 party members across the globe.
The Congress leader expresses unhappiness over the manner in which Goan youth are giving away their Indian nationality and opting for Portuguese passports in search of employment.
