PANJIM: Whenever senior BJP leader and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi steps on Goan soil, something good happens. This has been evident in the past and it was evident today when Modi landed at the Dabolim airport to attend Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s son’s wedding.
A local court upholding the clean chit given to him by a special investigation team in 2002 into the Gujarat riots came as a great relief to Modi, who was in the State to attend the State CM’s wedding reception along with other top leaders.
That Goa plays its lucky charm on Modi was also evident in 2002 when the leader was under tremendous pressure because of the Gujarat riots and his future in the party seemed doubtful. While Vajpayee wanted his head after demands by alliance partners, the BJP national executive held in Goa in that year saw senior leader L K Advani taking up for Modi.
Again, in 2013, at the party’s National Executive held in the State, Modi was declared as the head of the campaign committee, a move that brought him closer to being declared as the PM candidate.
