MARGAO: Burglars continue to make merry in the Margao police sub-division. Three days after an elderly citizen was done to death, burglars struck in a big way in the commercial capital committing two daring daylight burglaries on Thursday and decamping with valuables worth over Rs five lakh.
In a daring daylight burglary, miscreants broke into two residential apartments near the Kabrastan at Pajifond and decamped with cash and gold ornaments, besides silver items and expensive watches, all worth around Rs five lakh. The incident occurred between 12.30 pm to 3.30 pm when the owner Esmenia along with other family members had gone out for a wedding reception. When Esmenia returned at around 3.30 pm, she found the door wide open with the latch broken. Her worst fears came true when she landed in her bedroom only to find the cupboard ransacked and the gold, cash and other items stolen from the apartment.
Esmenia told the police that the miscreants had lifted away cash of Rs 50,000, besides a necklace, gold chain, earrings and six watches.
Even as a Margao police team led by Melson Colaco descended on the building, neighbours found another apartment located on the first floor targeted by burglars. They effected entry into the apartment owned by one Michael D’Souza via the same modus operandi by breaking open the latch, but could not find any valuables. They are believed to have searched the cupboard as evident by some items scattered on the bed.
A neighbour, who called up the owner to intimate him about the incident, said that there were no valuables in the house at the time of the incident. The Margao police are investigating.
Meanwhile, burglars also successfully targeted a residential house at Mungul and decamped with cash on Thursday morning. The Margao police are investigating both the cases.
