PanjiM: The initiative of the Goa State Horticulture Corporation Ltd (GSHCL) to ease the onion inflation would require a minimum of 60 to 70 tonnes of onions a day.
“We would need around 60 to 70 tonnes of onions daily to distribute to all the vans across Goa,” GSHCL Managing Director Larry Barreto claimed.
With the prices of onion touching Rs 70 to Rs 80 a kg in the open market in the State, GSHCL has announced it would sell the commodity at a rate 25 per cent cheaper – Rs 40 a kg – than at which it is being sold at its outlets, through mobile vans from Monday.
Though on Friday, GSHCL Chairman Kiran Kandolkar said it will be made available for about 15 days, the Corporation MD hinted that the discount will continue till the onion crisis ends.
When queried about how the corporation will go about this, Barreto said, “We are not purchasing stock of onion at once and distributing in market. We will continue our normal procedure of buying onions everyday from Belgaum market and sell them at a discounted rate through our mobile van.” In Belgaum, the current wholesale price of onions is Rs 53 a kg.
