PANJIM: The Geographical Indications (GI) Registry has accepted Goa’s proposal for GI tag for five items unique to the state — mancurad mango, Bebinca, Agassaim brinjal, Cashew (nuts and apple) and the seven-sided okra (saat-shiro bhendo).
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the government has said that the five GI applications filed for these produce are examined by the GI Registry and accepted for further process.
The government said that GI applications are also filed for three more items- Korgut rice, Taleigao brinjal and Manghilar mango, whereas applications for Goan sausages, coconut shell items, kunbi saree and Goa Mussarat mango are to be filed shortly.
The government has appealed to producers and farmers associated with the production of these items to be part of the GI mission by becoming the members of the producers association.
The Department of Science, Technology and Waste Management, is being appointed as the Nodal Department to undertake GI registrations, for various Goan items/produce such as agricultural, handicrafts, food items and handloom has designated Goa State Council for Science and Technology for initiating required process and work as facilitator for the said work.
