Goa Police in no hurry to arrest Edwin Nunes; say ‘he’s not wanted by us’

Anjuna PI says CBI and Hyderabad police are on the lookout for him, and Goa police cooperate ‘when the need arises’; Hyderabad HC also dismisses Edwin's appeal in his anticipatory bail matter

Mapusa: The Goa police seem almost reluctant to gate crash into the Hyderabad police’s ‘party’ or so it seems. Or more specifically, catching the ‘wanted’ Edwin Nunes, the boy next door to the Anjuna police, is not quite the Goa police’s problem. He is Hyderabad Police or the CBI’s catch

However, each passing day’s delay makes this an improbable catch.

But the reality is that a uniformed force, albeit from another state is looking for a person accused in a serious drug offense, to join the investigation. They have asked the Goa police to proactively look for Edwin Nunes.

Importantly Nunes has, by the Anjuna police’s own admission, violated the bail condition imposed when he got bail in the NDPS case investigated by the Goa police.

However, zeroing in on Edwin doesn’t seem to be a priority at all. In fact, it is doubtful of it is even a routine task at hand.

Read what the Police Inspector Anjuna has to say, “Nunes is not wanted in a criminal case, but the CBI and the Hyderabad Police are on the lookout for him. We have always cooperated with the Hyderabad Police as and when the need arose,” said Desai.

The Anjuna police stated that they have sought for cancellation of Edwin’s bail as he had violated the conditions by not appearing before the police as and when he was required.

“The matter will be argued in court on October 11,” said PI Prashal Desai.

Edwin Nunes, who is presently wanted by three different police forces, viz Anjuna Police in NDPS case, CBI in Sonali Phogat case while the Hyderabad police are after him for his alleged involvement in the Pritesh Borkar case, is presently absconding and yet to be nabbed.

The Anjuna Police on Thursday informed that they have kept regular checks at the residence of Nunes, however, it hasn’t formed any special team to search him.

“There is no special team formed to trace Nunes. However, we are keeping regular checks at his residence,” Anjuna PI Prashal Desai said.

Nunes, the police state, has flouted his bail conditions in the narcotic case against him connected to the Sonali Phogat death case. While the main case is being probed by the CBI, the presence of drugs and their consumption in Curlies restaurant owned by Nunes, is a part of a separate NDPS case under the Anjuna PS.

“As soon as we get inputs on the whereabouts of Edwin Nunis, we will inform the Hyderabad Police. Hyderabad police will then take further action,” PI Desai said.

This comment is interesting since Nunes is a larger-than-life character from the village, known to every home and literally everyone. As one long-time Anjuna resident said, “No one wants to see, hear or know. It all comes back.”

On September 7 Nunes was granted bail by the NDPS court. However soon after he was booked by Hyderabad police for his alleged involvement in the interstate drug trade along with six others including Hilltop owner Steve who is presently in the custody of Hyderabad police.

He has also been booked for producing a fake Covid certificate issued by a private hospital to evade showing up for questioning and possible arrest.

Meanwhile, the Hyderabad High Court on Thursday dismissed the anticipatory bail application of Nunes in the Pritesh Borkar matter.

Meanwhile, the hearing in the cancellation of bail of Edwin Nunes, which Anjuna Police moved, has been fixed on October 11.

Edwin Nunes was granted conditional bail by the NDPS court, under which he was supposed to report to the Investigating Officer as and when called. But since he did not obey the conditions of the bail, Anjuna Police moved the application for cancellation of his bail.
