PANJIM: As over half a dozen police personnel besides two Superintendents of Police superannuate on Saturday, the Goa Police Department intends to use their experience and expertise to educate the younger squad in the elite force.

At a farewell event organised for the outgoing officers, Director General of Police Jaspal Singh mooted the idea to hold a function of all the retired policemen/officers.

“You never know when your time passes. You don’t look at your watch to check the time while you are in the line of duty. You have no sense of time but, after retirement, I have spoken to many retirement officers, the major problem you face is how to spend the time if you don’t get or seek reemployment,” he said.

The DGP, while applauding the fitness of the retired officers, said he would rope them in to assist the department or deliver talks at their seminars.

“Our officers don’t look like retired officers. They have excellent health. They are mentally and physically fit. I would love to have them in the organisation in one capacity or the other. They can come and deliver talks to the younger officers. They can otherwise assist us. Once a policeman always a policeman,” he further said adding the policemen can always bank upon the department.

At the same time, the DGP has proposed to hold a function for all the retired officers to learn from their experiences and interact with them.

SPs Dinraj Govekar and Mahesh Gaonkar, who also retire on April 30, recalled their 35 years of service filled with roller coaster ride but also huge support from their superiors. Both the officers worked under Singh during his previous stints as SP South Goa and Inspector General of Police.

Conceding to the two officers’ remark about “Goa Police being one of the best forces in the country”, DGP Singh recalled investigations and agitations aptly handled during the outgoing officers’ postings as Police Inspectors of respective police stations several years ago. Their service as SPs was also well appreciated by the department.

“I also request Dinraj and Mahesh that they shall continue to be associated with the department, and both of them have worked with me,” Singh said.
