IRB PSI booked for negligence as wife ‘shoots’ self while ‘cleaning’ service revolver

PSI Dhanu, a Guirim resident, negligently left his service revolver unattended, which caused the incident; wife Gauri sustains serious thigh injuries and hand fracture

PANJIM: The Mapusa Police on Wednesday registered a case against IRB PSI Dhanu Bogati for negligence after his wife was seriously injured while ‘cleaning’ his service revolver at their residence in Guirim.
According to Mapusa DySP Jivba Dalvi, the Panjim magistrate recorded the statement of the cop’s wife, 24-year-old Gauri Dhanu Bogati, who is undergoing treatment at the Goa Medical College and Hospital at Bambolim, in the presence of an NGO representative. In her statement, Gauri said that the incident occurred when she was cleaning the house, and as she came across a revolver, she tried to clean it too. And while doing so, she accidentally pulled the trigger and shot herself.
Gauri sustained serious injuries to her right thigh and fracture on her right hand, for which she underwent surgery.
Upon further inquiry, it was revealed that the IRB PSI Dhanu, a resident of Guirim, negligently left his service revolver unattended, which caused the incident.
The police later requisitioned the services of the forensic team and collected the bullet residue and other important material from the site.
Both had married seven months ago.
An offence under Section 338 of the IPC has been registered against the cop.
Further investigation is in progress.
Sources revealed that the cop was deployed on duty at the Maulignem firing point of the Goa Police.
It is reportedly learnt that cops are supposed to deposit their weapons at the ‘kota’ after duty.
Even if a police officer has his service revolver as part of his uniform, then he is supposed to keep it in safe custody even at his residence and the weapon is never to be loaded.
The magazine has to be kept empty and bullets need to be kept safely and not in the gun.
Sources also said that there was no need for the officer to move around with his service revolver as there is no law and order problem in Goa these days.
