‘Goa police short-staffed’

PORVORIM: Goa Police department is short-staffed to the tune of almost around one thousand police personnel at different levels, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the House. 
The police stations in the urban and coastal areas including that in Panjim and Calangute were worst-affected along with the special units formed to man the coast and also vital establishment like airport. 
In a written reply tabled on the Floor of the House, Parrikar has said that in all 966 police jobs, of different designations, were needed to be filled across various police stations and special units in the state. 
Goa police force currently has total 6076 personnel at various levels including 3,259 constables. “Steps are taken to fill the required additional posts in Goa police department,” Parrikar said
The question was tabled by Congress legislator Isidore Fernandes. 
The police station manning the Konkan Railway Corporation’s stations need 68 more policemen including one full-time police inspector.
The Calangute police station, which covers vast area comprising the world famous beaches, was short staffed by 78 policemen, including five police sub-inspectors.
Panaji police station which mans the capital city and surround areas is in need of 73 more personnel, including seven officers of the assistant sub-inspectors’ rank.
Yet another police station manning Mapusa city was short-staffed by 64 personnel including five officers to the rank of police sub-inspectors.
Crucial Anti Terrorist Squad needs 60 more staff including one Superintendent of Police, two Deputy Superintendent of Police, two police inspectors and six police sub inspectors.
One of the most short-staffed facilities was the Harbour Police Station near Vasco port town, which needs 80 additional policemen, including five police sub-inspectors.
Responding to yet another question, the Chief Minister stated that there are total 843 policemen who were working without promotion for the last ten years.
Speaking about filling the vacancies, Parrikar has said that Police Establishment Board was formed to take up the issues of promotions of officials of the rank of Dy SP and below rank of Dy SP. 
“Staff are promoted by following Promotion guidelines issued by government from time-to-time and by following eligibility criteria laid down in recruitment rules for the post,” he said.
