Over two months since signing the MoU, the State has so far sent 150 samples for chemical analysis to six different forensic science laboratory (FSLs) to its counterparts in other States.
As per the agreement, FSLs located in Belgaum, Gulbarga and Mangalore are taking cases of north Goa district; labs in Bangalore, Mysore and Davangere accept samples from the south Goa district. “Each FSL will accept 30 samples each. We have prioritized the cases based on which exhibits are sent,” an officer said.
The building of State forensic laboratory at Verna was inaugurated in 2007 giving hope that Goa’s dependency on other FSLs for chemical analysis will cease. Eight years down the line, Goa’s dependency increased manifold and the government received a real shock when three years ago, outstation labs refused to accept viscera samples.
A memorandum of understanding with Karnataka government came as a major relief as it accepted examining 180 samples per month. Interestingly, the cost per exhibit comes to Rs 500, which is much cheaper compared to Rs 15,000 charged by CFSL, Hyderabad.
