The monsoon season has just kick started, but Goa has already received 66 per cent surplus rains for the season, with Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recording 736mm, which is almost 30 inches of rainfall till Wednesday.
As per IMD Goa data, from June 1 to June 17, 443mm (18 inches) of rainfall is considered as normal. However, State received 736.0mm of rainfall. Also, with over five inches of rainfall (137.2mm), June 17 turned out to be wettest day of the season for now, followed by June 3 that recorded four inches (100mm) of rainfall.
The State recorded 485.6mm of rainfall from June 11, with the southwest monsoon onset over Goa. Last year, the month of June had recorded below normal rainfall, even though the season ended up with 33 per cent surplus rains. The southwest monsoon currents have been active over the State since June 11 due to various reasons including low pressure area in Bay of Bengal and upper air circulation over North Konkan.
As per the data, on June 11, the State recorded 42mm of rainfall, which increased to 69.1 mm on June 12, 64.3mm on June 13 and 54.8mm on June 14. On June 16, 90.3mm of rainfall was recorded. The four-month long season will conclude in September.
