Goa records two more COVID deaths on Sunday

85 fresh cases reported on July 12; 59 patients recover

PANJIM/CANACONA: Goa’s COVID-19 death tally touched 14 on Sunday, after two patients, who were critically ill, succumbed to the infection. The State has now reported five deaths in less than 48-hours with three being reported on Saturday.

An 80-year old woman from Chicalim in Vasco and a 49-year-old man from Palolem, Canacona, both with co-morbid conditions, who were admitted at dedicated COVID ESI hospital Margao, expired today.

While this is the first death reported in Canacona taluka, the port town is turning out to be a hotspot with seven deaths so far.

Sources revealed that the woman died at around 7.30am on Sunday, while the man, who was shifted from a private hospital on June 28, after  detecting with the virus, died on Sunday afternoon.

Dr Vandana Desai, Health Officer at Canacona Health Centre (CHC) said the Palolem resident had tested positive while undergoing treatment for another ailment at a private hospital.

Sources close to the victim said that the victim was undergoing treatment at the ESI Hospital, Margao after he tested positive for COVID-19 two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, a close family member, who had accompanied the victim to the private hospital where he contracted the infection, also tested positive for COVID-19. However, the family member has recovered and has been discharged from a COVID Care Centre, informed CHC sources.

“This is a first COVID death case of the total 19 confirmed cases in Canacona. 10 have recovered so far and 8 cases are active,” informed Dr Desai.

“Final rites of the deceased were performed late in the evening at the local church cemetery in the presence of close family members by following the procedures,” said Canacona Deputy Collector Satish Prabhu.

Goa had reported its first two COVID deaths on June 23.

As per the bulletin issued by Directorate of Health Services (DHS), 85 fresh COVID cases were reported on Sunday; while 59 patients recovered.

Out of 5008 samples tested, 85 tested positive, while 2328 reports were negative. Results of 2595 reports are still awaited.

As of Sunday, the State has a total 2453 confirmed cases of which 952 are active cases. Also 1487 patients have recovered, besides 28 suspects were placed under isolation.

Also, eleven domestic travellers and two international travellers were placed under home quarantine, while 38 were under facility quarantine.

The virus has already spread across 27 assembly constituencies.

The State, which was once declared Green Zone with no cases in April, today has two containment zones and over ten micro-containment zones.
