PANJIM: Goa has jumped to the 3rd highest position in the third edition of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index 2020-21 released by Niti Aayog on Thursday.
With a score of 72 out of 100, Goa that falls under the top most ‘front runner’ category in this year’s index, has improved from its score of 65 in the 2019-20 index, where the State was ranked 7th.
While these rankings are amongst States only, Goa’s score is above all the Union Territories (UTs) except for Chandigarh that achieved a score of 79. Incidentally, Delhi achieved a score of 68.
Amongst the States, only Kerala in first place (75), Himachal Pradesh (74) and Tamil Nadu (74) in joint second place, are above Goa. Goa with 72 points shares the same score as Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Uttarakhand while it’s higher than Sikkim (71) and Maharashtra (70).
This year’s index, developed in collaboration with the United Nations in India, tracks the progress of all States and UTs on 115 indicators that cover 16 SDGs, which are aligned to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation’s (MoSPI) National Indicator Framework (NIF).
The composite score for each State/UT was computed by aggregating their performance across the goals, by taking the arithmetic mean of individual goal scores. The composite score ranges from 0 to 100 and denotes the overall achievement of the State/UT in achieving the targets set for 2030.
Goa tops the list in two SDGS for both States and Union Territories scoring 100 out of 100. These two goals out of the 16 are ‘Affordable & Clean Energy’ and ‘Clean Water & Sanitation’.
