Goa scientists laud Google’s tribute to Indian physicist S N Bose

It was on June 4, 1924 Bose sent his quantum formulations to Albert Einstein

PANJIM: Scientists from Goa on Saturday lauded Google’s tribute to Indian physicist and mathematician Satyendra Nath Bose through a special doodle for his contribution to the Bose-Einstein Condensate.

It was on this day in 1924, he sent his quantum formulations to Albert Einstein who immediately recognized it as a significant discovery in quantum mechanics.

Satyendra Nath Bose (1894 – 1974) was a specialist in quantum mechanics in 1920s who founded the Bose–Einstein statistics and the theory of the Bose–Einstein condensate. “Bosons” was the name given to the class of particles that obey Bose–Einstein statistics by Paul Dirac.

He was one among the top Indian scientists to be awarded Padma Vibhushan in 1954. His teachers Jagadish Chandra Bose, Prafulla Chandra Ray and Naman Sharma were his inspiration in his early life.

“Mr Bose is a legendary figure not only in India but world over. He taught at many important universities and set up new departments and laboratories to teach advanced courses for MSc and BSc. In 1924, Bose wrote a paper deriving Planck’s quantum radiation law without the use of classical physics by simply counting states with identical particles – a revolutionary feat in quantum statistics. It is befitting that a global internet search engine paid tribute to one of the greatest scientists this country has ever produced,” former chief scientist at NIO Dr M R Ramesh Kumar said.

Veteran nuclear scientist Bimalendu Dey said that Bose was expert in quantum theory, which is connected with matter. All matters are made of atom. The whole universe is made of matter.

“Mr Bose sent his research to Albert Einstein, who is known as father of nuclear energy. Mr Bose’s concepts on quantum mechanics are used in nuclear power generation. It shows how far reaching was the work done by him,” Dey said.

He added that Google is a very popular search engine and the fact that it has put up a doodle in his memory will lead to many Internet users find out more about Bose’s work and his contributions in the field of physics at a time when only the scientists from the western countries got recognised.
