PANJIM: While over one-third of the rural population in the country is illiterate as per the Socio Economic and Caste Census 2011, the scenario in Goa is different. The provisional survey indicates that after Kerala, Goa ranks second in the least illiterate population setting an example for other developed states.
The State is ahead of Kerala in the highest number of graduates and above education qualification after Delhi.
The data shows that Goa has 9.48 percent of its population under this category while Delhi records 9.62 percent. Puducherry stands at third position with 9.38 percent followed by Kerala with 7.75 percent having studies graduation or higher studies.
The survey that covered over 9.44 lakh rural population revealed that about 1.45 lakh are illiterates – 15.42 percent, as against Kerala that has only 11.38 percent population falling under this category. Interestingly, Rajasthan followed by Madhya Pradesh leads the pack of illiterate states.
The data further shows that Goa has 5.79 percent population that is literate but below primary education while 13.85 percent has completed primary education, 21.59 percent middle education and 20.59 percent has passed the secondary schools. Rural Goa also saw 11.64 percent completed higher secondary education, which is much more than 5.41 percent across the country.
