Goa to host ‘Seafarers Connect’ event to address issues plaguing maritime community

PANJIM: The Goa Maritime Officers Association (GMOA) announced the launch of the ‘Seafarers Connect: Hum Saath-Saath Hain’ project, an initiative by the Indian Director General of Shipping (DG Shipping), wherein Goa has been chosen as the inaugural host among the 13 maritime coastal States for this programme.

Scheduled to take place at Ravindra Bhavan – Margao on Saturday at 10 am, the event aims to address crucial issues affecting the seafaring community as well as foster personal interaction among Indian seafarers, serving on both merchant and cruise ships.

Key topics include challenges with sign-on/sign-off procedures and shore leave in Indian ports, highlighting seafarers’ struggles and the impact of mindless security and Covid-19 restrictions on their freedom to go ashore. The event underscores the difficulties faced by Goans with Portuguese and other nationalities in renewing certifications, emphasising the need for clear government guidelines.

Captain (Dr) Daniel Joseph, Deputy Director General of Shipping (Crew), will lead the event focusing on seafarers’ well-being, addressing critical issues, including stress and mental health challenges arising from competitive market conditions, onboard harassment, complex regulations, international conflicts, and piracy attacks. The event emphasises the need for a confidential helpline to address rising cases of depression and seafarer suicides.

“Goa takes pride in having more than 9,000 strong seafarers serving in various capacities worldwide in the Merchant Navy and cruise liners. The GMOA invites and welcomes all seafarers and their families from Goa to participate in a dialogue with the DG Shipping,” said GMOA President Captain Jerson Da Silva.

“This event seeks to provide a platform for seafarers to come together, share experiences, and address key issues concerning the seafaring community who are the backbone of the maritime industry” said GSAI President Frank Viegas.
